Exploring Local Education Facilities in St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands

St. John Education

St. John, the smallest of the three major U.S. Virgin Islands, is famous for its verdant scenery, postcard-perfect beaches and close-knit community. It is a refuge for tourists and nature lovers, but also a unique educational environment for residents. St. John education is influenced by this island culture, the impact of a small population, and the connection of a close-knit community. Here’s a closer look at educational institutions on the island.

Public Schools in St. John

St. John is part of the Virgin Islands Department of Education, and the island has a few public schools for children in the local community through middle school.

Julius E. Sprauve School (JESS)

JESS is the public school in Cruz Bay and the main one on the island. It is home to students from Pre-K to 8th grade. The school offers a traditional curriculum that follows U.S. standards, as well as cultural and environmental programs that are a reflection of island life.

Though high school students were previously bused to St. Thomas for school, there rumblings about expanding facilities to avoid this practice.

Gift Hill School (Private)

Not public, but for the sake of discussion, Gift Hill School is another private option for families.

Private and Independent Schools

Gifft Hill School

Gifft Hill School, independent, college prep, private school on the island. It provides Pre-K-12 education and is recognized for small classes and individualized learning, and it has a pronounced focus on sustainability and community building.

The school has two campuses, the lower campus (Pre-K–5) and upper campus (grades 6–12). Its Education and Resiliency Through Horticulture (EARTH) program combines learning and gardening — just right for the St. John’s environs.

Early Childhood Education

St. John also operates a number of early childhood centers and preschools, some on their own and others in partnership with various churches. These include:

ST. URSULA’S MULTI PURPOSE CENTRE PRESCHOOL

Cruz Bay Day Care Center

Such establishments prioritize early literacy and the development of motor skills and social interaction through play-based instruction perfect for little learners.

Post-Secondary Options

There is no college or university in St. John, however, residents frequently attend college through:

University of the Virgin Islands (UVI)  – on St. Thomas (short ferry ride). UVI grants undergraduate and graduate degrees in a variety of areas, and is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

Online Education – With higher levels of internet access and long-distance learning options – as well as an ever-accelerating pace of technology – many residents of St. John now study for degrees and/or certifications online from universities in the U.S. proper.

Educational Dilemmas and Possibilities

St. John has some unique educational challenges, given its size and its geography:

Transportation: Students at upper grades frequently travel to St. Thomas to attend school.

Funding and Resources Just like in so many small island communities, resources can be scarce and schools depend a lot upon community help and fundraising.

On the other hand, the island’s sense of community means teachers, students, and parents build strong relationships, and the education system withers Plant idea: Develop child-care programs for young B.C. families, and better programming for school-aged children.

Final Thoughts

Education in St. John, USVI is a mixture of classic education and island-based teachings. Through the community-driven public school system, the forward-thinking programs at Gifft Hill, and regional and online higher ed, families on the island have growing choices. Despite challenges, the legacy of excellent education and active community participation are still playing a part in bringing forth powerful potential for the young people of St. John.
